<>I agree that my comments should not be taken as a general statement but it is correct in this particular case. These two cards, with two different Brazilian stamps from the 1930's, nonetheless depict similar topics (里約熱內盧 的 山). Therefore their value should not differ by over 13-fold. I am confident that the seller of the higher priced card, being an award winner at international competitions, would know the value of his cards. Although this card did not sell at eBay, it could be attributed more to the popularity of the topic (i.e. relative to other more popular topics, for example, sculpture) than to the asking price. I am sure that the seller of the lower priced item is knowledgeable too. Therefore you could have asked him about the postmark before you placed the bid. Any way it is a fair price for the old postcard without accounting for the US $ 1.50 value of the used stamp.
<>
In general, philatelic prices depend on three factors: rareity (ie supply), demand and condition. Assuming superb conditions and similar demands (collector of one item would want the other item too) for both cards, then the crucial price determinant is rareity. The higher priced card carried a pricier stamp (US $ 9 vs US $ 3) but that is insignificant relative to the value of the maximum card(s). Thus the final value rests on the rareity of the correct Rio postmark. Do you not agree?
