Arles was not far from the Mediterranean. At the beginning of June 1888 Vincent visited the fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer where, in a matter of days, he produced two seascapes, a view of the village and nine drawings. He wrote to Theo about one of the seascapes: “I made the drawing of the boats when I left very early in the morning, and I am now working on a painting based on it, a size 30 canvas with more sea and sky on the right. 中国译作梵高，还是用习惯译法好。

The pronunciation of "Van Gogh" varies in both English and Dutch. Especially in British English it is /ˌvæn ˈɡɒx/ van-gokh or sometimes /ˌvæn ˈɡɒf/ van-gof. U.S. dictionaries list /ˌvæn ˈɡoʊ/ van-goh, with a silent gh, 梵高 (van Go), as the most common pronunciation. In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms on the right-hand side of a house on the Place Lamartine in Arles. His living quarters were the ones with the green shutters. The window on the first floor near the corner with both shutters open is that of Van Gogh's guest room, where Paul Gauguin lived for nine weeks from late October, 1888. Behind the next window, with one shutter closed, is Van Gogh's Bedroom. Vincent had finally found a place where he could not only paint but also welcome his friends. His goal was to establish a “Studio of the South,” where he and like-minded artists could work together.

Just as he did in Nuenen and Paris, Van Gogh here depicts his own surroundings. To the left we see the restaurant where he usually took his meals. His friend, the postman Joseph Roulin, lived to the right, behind the first railroad bridge.

The view is also an exploration of color contrast: “What a powerful sight, those yellow houses in the sun and then the unforgettable clarity of the blue [sky],” he wrote to Theo in the letter that accompanied a drawing he had made after the painting. ‘I am working with the enthusiasm of a man from Marseilles eating bouillabaisse, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to you because I am busy painting huge sunflowers.’ It was August, the sunflowers were blooming, and Van Gogh desperately wanted to capture them in a series of 12 pictures. Because the flowers wilted so quickly, he worked on his canvases every day.
He painted the series to decorate the room where Paul Gauguin would stay when he arrived in Arles. He chose this subject because his friend had previously admired his paintings of sunflowers run to seed.
In the end, Vincent executed four sunflower still lifes; however, he felt only two were good enough to hang in Gauguin’s bedroom. He was later to paint three copies of them, one of which is the version in the Van Gogh Museum. (http://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/vgm/ ... on=1297&lang=en)

阿尔勒(Arles)周围的乡村，也是一片多山多石的草本沼泽地带。一丛丛丝柏、栎树随处可见，几条人造运河把大片土地改造成为丰产的良田，这里的橄榄园和葡萄园也远近闻名。东北方向是一排绵延的小丘，南面横贯着阿尔勒——博克运河，上面横跨着一些吊桥，这样的吊桥几乎与梵谷故乡荷兰一些地方的吊桥一模一样，那是梵谷童年时代最久远、最深沉的记忆。于是，著名的《阿尔勒的朗格洛瓦桥》诞生了，梵谷画中的这座桥曾被拆除，后又照他的画作复原。(http://go.byecity.com/guide/6520.html)

上一层都是我的荷兰朋友自制的。只有一枚不是梵谷的画。

Here, Gauguin depicts his friend painting sunflowers. It is impossible, however, that he actually saw Van Gogh at work on this particular project, since when Gauguin painted this portrait no sunflowers were in bloom. But this was not a problem for Gauguin. Unlike Van Gogh, who nearly always based his work on direct observation, Gauguin relied more on memory and imagination in the creation of his canvases. Van Gogh painted a total of some 35 self-portraits during the course of his career. Of these, about 29 date from Paris. He very much wanted to paint portraits in this period, but could not afford models. Using his own reflection was a natural, inexpensive and easy solution. It allowed him to experiment with various styles, techniques and effects of light and color. Most of the Parisian self-portraits are rather smal. They were clearly meant as studies and as experiments. This can be seen in the loose, very free manner in which many are executed, and in the use of cheap materials such as cardboard in place of linen or canvas.
