The Church of the Protaton is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. It is located near the headquarters of the Epistassia and was built in the first half of the 10th century. Not only is it the oldest church on Mount Athos, it is also the only example of a three-aisled basilica with two narthexes. The north narthex is simply a portico. The church was restored at the end of the 13th century and frescoed some years later by Manuel Panselinos, a famous exponent of the Macedonian School of painting. 大劳拉修道院 （希腊语：Μεγίστη Λαύρα）。
公元963年，修士圣亚他那修的安東尼 (Άγιος Αθανάσιος ο Αθωνίτης)得到朋友——皇帝尼基弗鲁斯二世的支持, 大勞拉修道院（the monastery of Great Lavra）開始建造，到今天他仍是20个修道院中最大、最著名的一所。(http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/阿索斯山)
The Monastery of Megisti Lavra (or Great Lavra) is built on the south-eastern end of the Athos Peninsula and is the earliest and biggest foundation on Mount Athos. It was founded by the monk Athanasios the Athonite during the years of the Emperors Romanos the Second and Nikephoros Phocas. He is considered to be the founder of Athonite monasticism and the Holy Monastery of Great Lavra is the mother monastery of Mount Athos. The monastery occupies the first rank in the hierarchical order of the twenty Athonite monasteries. It is inhabited by 317 monks (1990), the most in comparison to the other monasteries, and is coenobitic (communal).
The katholikon has served as a model for all the katholika of the Athonite monasteries. It was built in 963 by Athanasios. It is a four-columned church with a dome. Restoration works performed at later times gave the church a cross-like shape. First it was dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but in the 15th century it was dedicated to Saint Athanasios Athonite. The katholikon is frescoed in the 16th century, by Theophanes the Cretan, a famous representative of the Cretan painting school. Left and right of the eso-narthex are two chapels dedicated to Saint Nicholas and to the Forty Martyrs. The tomb of Saint Athanasios is lying in the chapel of Forty Martyrs. 瓦托派季乌修道院 (希腊语：Βατοπέδι 或 Βατοπαίδι)
The Monastery of Vatopedi is located on the north-eastern part of the Athos peninsula. It was built in 972, founded by the monks Athanasios, Nicholas and Antonios, all three students of Saint Athanasios the Athonite. Today’s buildings were erected during the years of the emperor Manuel the first Komnenon. Vatopedi ranks second in the hierarchy of the monasteries. It is coenobitic (communal) and is inhabited by 80 monks (1999). The katholikon was built in the tenth century, and is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in accordance with the Athonite architecture. 伊维龙修道院 (希腊语：Ιβήρων)
The monastery of Iveron is located on the northeast side of the peninsula. The monastery was founded in the last quarter of the tenth century by John Tornikipos, a courtier of David the ruler of Iberia (格鲁吉亚, Georgia). The 16th century had been a period of prosperity for the monastery, and, as result, it had been decorated with splendid painting works. It occupies the third rank in the hierarchical order of the twenty Athonite monasteries. It is inhabited by 61 monks (1990) and until a few years is coenobitic (communal).
Its katholikon was first built in the first half of the eleventh century and was restored in 1513. It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It follows the typical plant of the Athonite church. The church’s interior was decorated at times from the 16th century to the 19th with magnificent frescoes. 希利安达里乌修道院 (希腊语：Χιλανδαρίου)
The monastery of Chilandariou lies on the north-east side of the peninsula. Its name is derived probably from the founder of an earlier monastic settlement at this spot, who was called Chelandaris. The monastery was founded in the late 12th century by the Serbian ruler Stephen Nemanya I and his son Rastko. During the 14th century, the monastery reached its highest peak, accumulating riches and heirlooms from imperial as well as private donnations. It is considered to be the main spiritual center of the Serbs. It holds the fourth place in the hierarchical rank of the monasteries, it is coenobitic (communal) and is inhabited by 46 塞尔维亚修士 (1990).
The katholikon is dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God. It was built at the beginning of the fourteenth century and follows the Byzantine Athonite plan. 戴奥尼索斯修道院 (希腊语：Διονυσίου)
The monastery of  Dionysiou is built on the peninsula’s south-western side and is dedicated to St John the Baptist. It was founded in the fourteenth century by Saint Dionysios of Korseos, a village near Kastoria. In 1535 the monastery had been destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and from then onwards its architecture and buildings remain unaltered. It occupies the fifth rank in the hierarchical order of the twenty Athonite monasteries. It is inhabited by 59 monks (1990) and is coenobitic (communal).
The katholikon of the monastery is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It was built during 1537–1547 and its walls were painted during the same period.
