印象派画家克劳德·莫奈 (Claude Monet) 43岁时在吉维尼小镇租了一座房子 并定居下来, 从1883 年他开始在此居住, 直到 1926 年去世, 莫奈的墓地亦被安置 在吉维尼供人瞻仰纪念。
走进莫奈花园, 园内花开鼎盛, 立刻仿佛置身于莫奈的画作之中, 当时的莫奈摈弃了 传统的按几何图形栽种和修剪 花木的法国花园模式, 而是像天女散花般, 把上千种奇花异卉撒在园地上, 任其争奇斗艳, 任其自由发展, 赤橙黄绿、青蓝紫白, 配色之完美, 犹如画家的调色板。 还有一个日本风格的人工湖园和日本桥, 池塘里面长滿他笔下著名的睡莲原形, 两边垂柳、翠竹、以及各色的花, 有着东方式的幽雅和法兰西式的浪漫。 《追忆逝水 年华》的作者普鲁斯特 曾经描述莫奈的这个花园, "色彩已经调妥, 美妙无比, 色调已经形成, 和谐悦目。这里不仅仅是一座花园, 更是艺术, 一幅取材自生活, 充满生命力, 在大自然中完成的大素描。" (http://hi.baidu.com/shimmer_chan ... eb7810377abe17.html)
Claude Monet noticed the village of Giverny while looking out of a train window. He made up his mind to move there and rented a house and the area surrounding it. In 1890 he had enough money to buy the house and land outright and set out to create the magnificent gardens he wanted to paint. Some of his most famous paintings, such as his water lily and Japanese bridge paintings, were of his garden in Giverny. Monet lived in Giverny from 1883 until his death in 1926.
