Normally, 2nd class stamps only cannot be used for cancellation.
However, Special Handstamp Centres （SHCs） accept full postage (over 1st
class) on one side of a postcard, such as London, Northern England and
Midland. Also, SHC in Glasgow accept full postage on both sides of a
postcard. If the postage of stamps affixed on both sides reach 1st
class, it will be OK. So this kind of maximum cards can only be
accepted by Glasgow SHC but London, Northern England and Midland. You
may see 2 maxicards of Holyrood Palace that I posted before. I used
only 10.5p stamps to make them. Of course, I affixed 24p stamps on the format side of maxicards for make-up.

For the cathedral stamps issued in 1969, they were not fit for MC making. All decimal currency Royal Mail postage stamps are valid for postage in the United Kingdom and should show at least the equivalent of the First Class postage rate. This includes the 1 pound value stamps bearing the head of Queen Elizabeth II that were issued before the introduction of decimal currency.

其实我开始对此也很奇怪，也许是英国的5个手盖戳中心对极限片的规章理解各不相同，感觉他们的盖戳规条有互相冲突的地方，或者碰到不同的盖戳人也许理解也不一样，同样的片有些人就会盖，有些人死活不肯。相对来讲，格拉斯哥和卡地夫的执行者要宽松一些，而英格兰的3个极为严格。以伦敦为例，我的一个朋友曾经去过伦敦的手盖戳中心，据说那里是24小时工作一周7天的，可能因为繁忙的原因，对邮品的邮资要求就卡得非常死，一般只有单面足额邮资才可以销盖；在海外的朋友也曾经抱怨首日封背面的补资邮票从来都不销戳，希望邮票可以都贴在一面。凡此种种，也算是英国邮政的所谓潜规则吧。此外，还有英国的军邮纪念戳（代码F开头），应该是不可以拿来制作极限片的。我当初在不知情的情况下，贸然寄了两片去，后来经过两个多月之后，居然收到了盖好戳的极限片，也许是碰到好心人吧。总的来说，5大手盖戳中心的情况就是如此，具体到实例还是和操作的人有关。
