The Monastery of Great Lavra (Greek: Μονή Μεγίστης Λαύρας) is the first monastery built on Mount Athos. It is located on the southeastern foot of the Mount at an elevation of 160 metres. The founding of the monastery in 963 by Athanasius the Athonite marks the beginning of the organized monastic life at Mount Athos. At the location of the monastery, there was one of the ancient cities of the Athos peninsula, perhaps Akrothooi, from which the sarcophaguses of the monastery that are in the oil storage house come from. The history of the monastery is the most complete in comparison with the history of the other monasteries, because its historical archieves were preserved almost intact. It is possible that the study of these archieves may contribute to the completion of the knowledge of the history of other monasteries, whose archieves were partially or all of them lost.

<>The main church (Katholikon) was found by Athanasius who also lost his life together with other 6 workers when during the construction one of the domes fell. The architectural style of the temple is characterized by the two large areas of the chorus and the preyer. This style was then consecrated and was copied by the other monasteries. The frescoes were made in 1535 by the great painter Theophanis. However, the narthex was painted in 1854.</P>
<>Northern of the preyer, there is the chapel of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste in which there is the grave of Athanasius. Southern of the prayer, there is the chapel of Saint Nicholas, painted by Franco Cantellano, in 1560. The trapeza opposite the central entrance has a shape of cross and is the biggest on Mount Athos. Its internal is full of frescoes, painted by Theophanis or his school.</P>
The vestry is behind the main church. Some of the most important artifacts are a manuscript of a gospel with a golden cover which is a gift from Nikephoros II Phokas and the list (Kouvaras) of the monks since Athanasius. There are also 2,500 icons which cover the whole history of hagiography of the second millennium. </P>
The library of the monastery contains 2,116 greek manuscripts and 165 codeces. Among them uncial manuscripts of the New Testament: Codex Coislinianus, Codex Athous Lavrentis, and Uncial 049. There are also over 20,000 printed books, and about 100 manuscripts in other languages. The collection is one of the richest collections of greek manuscripts in the world. The Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi (Greek: Βατοπέδι or Greek: Βατοπαίδι) on the Mount Athos was built during the second half of the 10th century, by three monks, Athanasius, Nicholas, and Antonius from Adrianople, who were the pupils of Athanasius the Athonite. A legendary tradition says that its construction was ordered in the 4th century by Eastern Roman Emperor Arcadius to honour the miraculous salvation by the Virgin Mary of his son from a shipwreck. The child is said to have been found in a brier bush--hence <I>Vato</I> (brier) <I>aidi</I> (child).



<>The Monastery of Vatopedi holds a belt held by believers to be the actual belt of the Theotokos, which she wore on earth and gave to Thomas the Apostle after her death and during her transition to heaven. The silver and jewel-encrusted reliquary containing the skull of St. John Chrysostom is kept in the Monastery and is credited by Eastern Orthodox Christians with miraclulous healings. The monastery also contains the <I>Iaspis</I>, a chalice fashioned of a single piece of the precious stone jasper, and numerous icons. </P>

The monastery was built by Georgians (under the supervision of Ioannes the Iberian and Tornikios) between 980-983 A.D and housed Georgian clergy and priesthood. The name Iviron originated from the ancient Georgian Kingdom of Iberia (Iveria) where the master architect of the monastery Ioannes was from. The monastery ranks third in the hierarchy of the Athonite monasteries.The library of Iveron monastery contains 2000 manuscripts, 15 liturgical scrolls, and 20,000 books, most of which are in Georgian, Greek, Hebrew and Latin. Hilandar (Serbian: Хиландар; Greek: Χιλανδαρίου) is a Serbian Eastern Orthodox monastery on Mount Athos in Greece. It was founded in 1198 by the Serbian Saint Sava and his father, Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja (who later became a monk there, taking the monastic name of "Simeon") of Raška. Due to the fact that its founders are Serbs and the first monks were of the Serbian Orthodox Church it is also called "The Serbian monastery" and is nowadays the monastery where Serbian Orthodox monks traditionally reside. The library holds 181 Greek and 809 Slavic manuscripts, abour 20 000 printed books (3 000 in Greek language). </P>
<>Among the numerous relics and other holy objects treasured at the monastery is the Wonderworking Icon of the Theotokos "Of the Akathist", the feast day of which is celebrated on January 12. Since Mount Athos uses the traditional Julian Calendar, the day they celebrate as January 12 currently falls on January 25 of the modern Gregorian Calendar. The monastery also possesses the Wonderworking Icon of the Theotokos "Of the Three Hands" (Greek: <I>Tricherusa</I>, Serbian: Тројеручице), traditionally associated with a miraculous healing of St. John Damascene around the year 717, St. John became a monk at Mar Sabbas outside of Jerusalem and gave the icon to the monastic community there. Later the icon was given to St. Sabbas of Serbia, who gave it to Hilandar when the Turks invaded Serbia. This icon has two feast days: June 28 (July 11) and July 12 (July 25).
